Getting To Know Your Door Hinges

Hinges might not be the most exciting pieces of engineering, or the biggest, by they are absolutely essential! There are a variety of different types of door hinges, with different features and characteristics, and it’s worthwhile knowing which type to go for.

What Are The Different Varieties Of Door Hinges?

Period Door Hinges and Hinge Fronts €“ These hinges are decorative as well as practical. Often used in traditional properties, listed buildings, manor houses, country homes or those imitating this style of property. If you’re going for this look, browse through our range of period thumb latch handles too. Add a door hinge and conceal it with a period door front to complete the look. The details make all the difference! Popular modern finishes are satin and polished chrome, satin and polished nickel and satin and polished stainless steel.  For a more traditional finish, look for polished brass, antique brass and bronze.

Butt Door Hinges €“ These are very popular types of door hinges, due to ease of application, price and sustainability. Commonly used on internal doors in domestic environments and offices, butt hinges are made from a variety of different materials including steel, stainless steel and brass.

Ball Bearing Hinges €“ These are similar to butt door hinges but they’re stronger and offer a smoother opening and closing action. Bear in mind, however, that they have a slightly larger knuckle than a butt hinge, which may not suit all residential applications. Used on internal doors and often made from steel or stainless steel, these hinges use a series of small race bearings to pivot.

Butt and ball bearing hinges come in a variety of sizes. For standard 35mm thick internal doors, a suitable hinge would be 75mm x 50mm (3″ x 2″).

For internal fire doors (44mm thick), a suitable hinge would be 102mm x 75mm (4″ x 3″).  Fire door hinges are also available in a slimline version which is 102mm x 67mm (4″ x 2 1/2″).

Stormproof and Cranked Hinges €“ Often associated with timber windows, these door hinges close over traditional window frames €“ which is called storm proofing.

Single and Double Action Spring Hinges €“ double action hinges enable a door to open both ways and are often used for industrial, commercial, institutional and residential applications. They incorporate a spring action within the pivot knuckle and are usually around double the size of a standard hinge. Single action spring hinges are UL Listed for fire door applications and are often used to convert doors to self-closing doors in existing buildings €“ making them ideal for hotels, apartment buildings and dormitories, where doors are usually required to be self-closing.

Parliament and Projection Hinges €“ These fold back 180Ëš on themselves. They are drilled with holes towards the edge of a broad hinge leaf enabling the hinge to clear obstructions when fully open. Often used on doors that are between two rooms so that the door can be opened fully against the wall, creating more space.
