Window Security Locks & Accessories
Whilst many designs of modern window fasteners, sash fasteners and stays as well as some traditional fasteners and stays are available with locks, some are not. For these and where existing non locking window furniture is fitted, it is possible to fit secondary window security locks which are produced by recognised manufacturers like Chubb, ERA and Ingersoll among others.
Basic Locking Mechanisms
For sliding sash windows, two basic types of lock are available. The sash or dual screw which locks the two sashes together where they meet in the middle of the window, such as the Chubb 8013 window bolt and the Era 826 dual screw. The other type is the sash stop, which generally allows the lower window to be opened slightly for ventilation; typical examples of these are the Chubb WS1 and the Era 822 sash stop.
For hinged casement windows there is a huge array of secondary security locks available, including locking casement pins. However, by far the most popular are the swing lock variety such as the Chubb 8K101 and the Era 809. They are easy to fit, simple to use and extremely effective.
Discreet Window Fasteners
The most discreet way of locking timber windows, if locking fasteners are not used is to have mortice security bolts, such as the Chubb 8001 installed. These are unobtrusive and extremely effective.
Further to locks, window restrictors such as the Era 720 are widely used to prevent excessive opening of the window and added child proof security.
