Storm Proof & Cranked Hinges

Storm proof hinges are most commonly associated with timber windows. The classic design of window where the sash closes over the frame is called storm proofing. This requires a specially designed hinge which was cranked at 90 degrees.

They are generally made of steel, are raw finish or plated and are normally 63mm hinges. Brass versions are also available, although less popular.

Cabinet Hinges

The principal is sometimes carried over to timber doors or larger timber windows and here the hinge is usually 100mm.

Cranked hinges were also very common on cabinet doors before the introduction of the modern kitchen unit hinge.
